2025 Season Report

Summary:

  • Eight field trials across southern Alberta. Barley, oats and peas on Chernozemic and sandy soils, testing a custom biochar blend against a commercial product and an untreated control.

  • Program-wide, biomass came in below the untreated control — 13% for the custom blend, 32% for the commercial product. On a sandy, low-organic site, the custom blend raised pea biomass 18% and plant height 30%.

  • Richer soils showed almost no yield response but improved CEC and organic carbon.

  • The pattern across every site was that soil condition determined the result more than the product did.
